Danang – A Beacon of Vietnam’s Tourism Recovery

In 2024, Danang’s tourism industry achieved results that exceeded expectations, with some metrics surpassing pre-Covid-19 levels. Moving into 2025, the city aims to serve over 11.9 million visitors at accommodation establishments, a 10% increase compared to 2024 and 149% of the 2019 figures.

According to the Danang Department of Tourism, the estimated number of visitors served by accommodation establishments in 2024 reached nearly 10.9 million, marking a 32% increase from 2023 and 135% of the 2019 level, exceeding the 2024 target by 29.3%. Among these, international visitors were estimated at over 4.1 million, up 36.3% year-on-year and 128% of the 2019 level, surpassing the 2024 plan by 65.8%. Domestic visitors were estimated at over 6.7 million, a 30.8% increase from 2023, 141% of the 2019 level, and 13.9% above the 2024 target.

In 2024, the average length of stay for overnight visitors in Danang was 1.5 days per trip, with international visitors averaging 1.56 days per trip and domestic visitors 1.44 days per trip. Among international markets, South Korea accounted for the largest share of visitors staying in Danang (40.55%), followed by China and Taiwan (China).

The number of air arrivals to Danang in 2024 was estimated at over 6.5 million, an increase of 5.4% compared to 2023 and a recovery to 84.3% of 2019 levels. As of now, there are 23 routes to Danang, including 7 domestic routes and 16 regular international routes. On average, Danang receives 111 flights per day, comprising 52 international and 59 domestic flights.

In 2024, Danang reopened domestic routes (Buon Ma Thuot, Phu Quoc) and international routes (Vientiane – Laos, Ahmedabad – India). Efforts were also made to launch new routes such as Cheongju – South Korea and Taichung – Taiwan (China). Additionally, two new airlines began operating flights to Danang for the first time in 2024: Malaysia Airlines (Kuala Lumpur – Danang) and Hong Kong Airlines (Hong Kong, China – Danang).

Upgrading Accommodation Infrastructure

By the end of 2024, Danang will have 1,290 tourist accommodations with a total of 46,527 rooms. Among these, there are 110 4-5 star or equivalent establishments, offering 21,293 rooms, with 70 of them officially certified as 4-5 star. For the entire year, the revenue from accommodation and dining services in Danang is estimated at 26,971.3 billion VND, a 21% increase compared to 2023. Accommodation revenue alone is projected to reach 10,051.9 billion VND, up 31.7%, while dining services are estimated at 16,919.4 billion VND, an increase of 15.4% year-on-year.

A recent report by Savills Hotels predicts that Danang will soon lead Vietnam in hotel supply growth, surpassing many other tourism hubs due to a surge in branded properties and room numbers. In 2024 alone, several major hotel brands have opened in Danang, contrasting with declining new supply in other cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Quy Nhon, and Nha Trang.

New Hospitality Openings in Danang in Q4/2024

In Q4/2024, a series of new accommodations across various segments commenced operations in Danang, including Radisson RED Danang, Signature by M Village Danang Heritage, Fusion Resort & Villas Danang, and Crowne Plaza Danang City Centre. Among these, Signature by M Village Danang Heritage is a boutique hotel with 33 culturally and historically inspired rooms. Radisson RED offers 153 rooms with a bold and modern design, while Fusion Resort & Villas Danang targets the luxury segment with its high-end resort villas.

Speaking about the decision to choose Danang as the location for the first Radisson RED property in Southeast Asia, Nicole Weitsz, General Manager of Radisson RED Danang, highlighted that the city attracts both international and domestic tourists, providing a vibrant environment for art, music, and experiences. Additionally, Danang’s emerging status as a business hub and its proximity to iconic destinations such as Hoi An and Hue make it a top choice for expansion.

Diversifying Tourism Offerings

In 2024, Danang travel companies introduced a variety of enticing tour programs, ranging from city tours and visits to historical and cultural sites to outdoor adventures and island excursions. These increasingly diverse tour options cater to a wide range of visitors, including combined itineraries linking Danang with nearby destinations like Hoi An, Hue, and Quang Nam, as well as luxury resort stays.

Danang’s Tourism Products: A Fresh and Vibrant Experience

Danang and its businesses have invested significantly in developing tourism products to attract and cater to visitors, creating a dynamic and refreshing atmosphere. In the realm of festival and event tourism, the city successfully hosted internationally acclaimed events such as the Danang International Fireworks Festival 2024, Danang Asian Film Festival, Danang International Marathon, IRONMAN competition, Vietnam-Brazil Football Festival, Southeast Asian Student Games, Danang Enjoyment Festival, Asian Development Golf Tournament, beach tourism season openings, as well as various music festivals and events.

To enhance evening experiences for visitors, Danang launched several nighttime attractions, including the Bach Dang Walking Street and nighttime activities at the East Bank Park near Nguyen Van Troi Bridge. Other initiatives include the inauguration of the Danang Beach Flower Street, increasing the frequency of fire and water performances at Dragon Bridge, water music shows at 2/9 Square, and extending the operating hours of Han River experiences until 1 a.m. during holidays and festivals.

Danang enhances nighttime experiences for tourists

Notably, 2024 marks the first time Da Nang has been recognized in the prestigious Michelin Guide with 36 featured locations, including one MICHELIN one-star restaurant, one MICHELIN green-star restaurant, and 16 Bib Gourmand establishments. Among them, the highlight is Da Nang’s first MICHELIN one-star restaurant, La Maison 1888, located at the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort in Bai Bac, Son Tra, Da Nang. This recognition provides a valuable opportunity to promote Da Nang’s culinary brand to the world and boost food tourism. Concurrently, the Department of Tourism has launched the Da Nang Food Tour campaign, introduced a digital culinary map, and implemented a plan to develop gastronomy as a unique tourism product in Da Nang.

In 2024, cultural-historical, community-based, ecological, and themed park tourism models have also been enhanced. Da Nang has opened the Hai Van Quan historical site to visitors, operated eight agricultural and community tourism models in Hoa Vang, and supported their development into OCOP tourism products. Additionally, programs such as tours to observe langurs on the Son Tra Peninsula have been introduced. Numerous new attractions and shows have been launched at Sun World Ba Na Hills, Da Nang Downtown, Mikazuki Resort Complex, and Nui Than Tai Hot Springs Park, along with trial programs for non-motorized paragliding on the Son Tra Peninsula.

Overall, with its solid foundations and strategic tourism development, Da Nang continues to stand out as a bright spot in the city’s economic growth and Vietnam’s tourism industry as a whole. Compared to 2023, Da Nang’s tourism activities have regained strong momentum in 2024, with numerous national and international events, festivals, and new tourism products and services attracting a large number of visitors to the city.
